چکیده

In the present work, a new method for the integration of simultaneously recorded EEG and fMRI data in epilepsy is presented. Independent component analysis (ICA) is performed on EEG data, five metrics are applied upon each component spectrum, and a general linear model for each time course is fit to the fMRI data. The proposed methodology was applied to data collected from one patient, systematically producing wider and more significant activation maps when compared with the standard square waveform regressor. Furthermore, the EEG metrics with a frequency content were better predictors of the BOLD signal than global power metrics, supporting previous theoretical predictions and experimental evidence.

A personalized history of EEG-fMRI integration

In this personalized review, the history of EEG recorded simultaneously with functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) is summarized. A brief overview is given of the hardware development followed by a discussion of EEG-fMRI applications. The technique's development was clinically motivated in the context of epilepsy. Accordingly, the evolution of studies trying to identify with EEG-fMRI the origin of individu...

EEG-fMRI in the preoperative work-up for epilepsy surgery.

Epilepsy surgery requires precise localization of the epileptic source. EEG-correlated functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) is a new technique showing the haemodynamic effects of interictal epileptiform activity. This study assesses its potential added value in the presurgical evaluation of patients with complex source localization. Adult surgical candidates considered ineligible because of an unclear foc...

Integrating EEG and fMRI in epilepsy

Integrating electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies enables to non-invasively investigate human brain function and to find the direct correlation of these two important measures of brain activity. Presurgical evaluation of patients with epilepsy is one of the areas where EEG and fMRI integration has considerable clinical relevance for localizing the...

Electrophysiological correlates of the BOLD signal for EEG-informed fMRI

Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are important tools in cognitive and clinical neuroscience. Combined EEG-fMRI has been shown to help to characterise brain networks involved in epileptic activity, as well as in different sensory, motor and cognitive functions. A good understanding of the electrophysiological correlates of the blood oxygen level-depen...

Presurgical EEG-fMRI in a complex clinical case with seizure recurrence after epilepsy surgery

Epilepsy surgery has improved over the last decade, but non-seizure-free outcome remains at 10%-40% in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and 40%-60% in extratemporal lobe epilepsy (ETLE). This paper reports a complex multifocal case. With a normal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) result and nonlocalizing electroencephalography (EEG) findings (bilateral TLE and ETLE, with more interictal epileptiform...
